Central Railway Installs Pioneering Floating Solar Plant
The Central Railway has launched a groundbreaking initiative by installing a 10 MWp floating solar plant in Igatpuri Lake, nestled in the Western Ghats. This marks the first such installation by the Indian Railways, showcasing its commitment to sustainable energy.
Embracing Solar and Wind Power
As part of its journey towards achieving zero carbon emissions by 2030, Central Railway has commissioned 12.05 MWp solar plants across rooftops of stations and buildings, including a 4 MWp addition last year. This capacity, measured in Mega Watt Peak (MWp), signifies the maximum potential power output. In the fiscal year 2023-24, these installations saved Rs. 4.62 crores and reduced carbon footprints by 6594.81 MT. Plans are underway to add another 7 MWp of solar capacity this year.
Advancing Renewable Energy
Central Railway's renewable energy portfolio currently includes 56.4 MW of wind power and 61 MW of solar power. Additionally, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) have been signed for 325 MW of solar and wind energy to be available 'Round-the-Clock.' In the current financial year, 180 MW of solar and 50 MW of wind power are expected to be operational. These efforts equate to the environmental benefits of saving 250,000 trees.
The First Floating Solar Plant on Indian Railways
The installation of the 10 MWp floating solar plant in Igatpuri Lake represents a significant milestone. This pioneering project is the first of its kind on Indian Railways and exemplifies the organization's innovative approach to renewable energy.
Anticipated Benefits
Central Railway's current monthly power consumption stands at 236.92 million units for traction and 9.7 million units for non-traction activities. With the integration of these renewable energy sources, it is anticipated that 70% of the traction energy will be green.
Recognizing Efforts Towards Energy Efficiency
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has introduced labeling programs—Shunya for Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) and Shunya Plus for Net Positive Energy Buildings (NPEB)—to promote energy-efficient building practices. In recognition of its environmental conservation efforts, Central Railway has been awarded the Shunya Plus label for five buildings and the Shunya label for two buildings.
Committed to a Green Future
Central Railway remains steadfast in its dedication to harnessing renewable energy, enhancing passenger amenities, and contributing to the Indian Railway's goal of a greener planet.
